Veteran quarterback Kyler Murray has signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced on Thursday, just one day after Murray was officially released by the Arizona Cardinals, where he played during his first seven seasons in the NFL. Murray also confirmed the move on his X account. He posted a photo of himself wearing Vikings gear with the caption ‘Skol‘, a popular chant used by Minnesota fans.
Even though the Cardinals released him, Arizona will still owe Murray $36.8 million for the 2026 season under the terms of his previous contract. Because of that, the Vikings will only pay him about $1.3 million, which is the league-minimum salary for players with seven or more years of experience. According to multiple reports, the contract also includes a no-tag clause, reported Reuters. This means Minnesota cannot use the franchise tag to keep Murray after the 2026 season if he becomes a free agent.
Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, now joins the Vikings after spending his entire career with the Cardinals. During his time in Arizona, Murray started all 87 regular-season games he played for the Cardinals. However, injuries limited him to just five games in the 2025 season. In those appearances, he completed 110 of 161 passes for 962 yards, throwing six touchdowns and three interceptions. He finished with a passer rating of 88.6. Through the first five weeks of that season, Murray also led the team in rushing with 173 yards.
Across his seven seasons with the Cardinals, Murray completed 1,974 of 2,941 passes for 20,460 yards. He recorded 121 touchdown passes and 60 interceptions during that span. His 1,974 completions rank second in franchise history, while his total passing yards and touchdown passes both rank third.

Murray holds a career passer rating of 92.2 and a completion percentage of 67.1. That completion rate is the highest in Cardinals history among players who attempted at least 232 passes and ranks fifth-best in NFL history.
Murray began his college career at Texas A&M Aggies football in 2015, where he worked with current Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach Jordan Traylor. After one season, he transferred to Oklahoma Sooners football. Because of NCAA transfer rules, Murray sat out the 2016 season and served as backup to Baker Mayfield in 2017. Murray became the starter in 2018 and had a breakout year, throwing for 4,361 yards with 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Murray led Oklahoma to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance and won the Heisman Trophy. He later declared for the 2019 NFL Draft and is also the only athlete drafted in the top 10 of both the NFL and MLB.
