An unexpected retirement came down on Thursday from a former New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher.

According to a post on his Instagram, edge rusher Bryce Huff has decided to retire from the NFL, which comes as a surprise because he’s just 27 years old.

Huff revealed that a wrist injury he had while playing for the Eagles led to him re-evaluating his career and “what really mattered in my life.”

“I spent a year in Philadelphia where we won a Super Bowl. It wasn’t the smoothest season for me, personally, and I’ve always been honest about that,” Huff said in the video posted to social media. “Early on, I let things affect how I approach my work and by the time I got my mind right, I had torn a ligament in my wrist. That injury forced me to step back and really evaluate what really mattered in my life.”

As far as his plans for his post-playing career go, Huff revealed he is starting a company called Naberstone, which will build safety infrastructure to help reduce fire risk from lithium-ion batteries.

“This mission will save lives,” Huff said.

While his career didn’t last as long as it could have, Huff is still an NFL success story after putting together a six-year career despite going undrafted.

His best season came in 2023 with the Jets, when he tallied 10 sacks, which he parlayed into three-year, $51 million contract with the Eagles.

Huff went on to win a Super Bowl with Philadelphia in 2024, but he struggled for the entire season and was ultimately a disappointment. Huff was even a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl.

The Memphis product was traded to the San Francisco 49ers last season but failed to regain that 2023 form, although he did play a bit better with four sacks.

With Huff hanging up his cleats, the Niners will save a whopping $17 million, per David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard.
