The SEC figures to be a complete gauntlet heading into the 2026-27 season.
When canvasing the league as a whole, there’s certainly a grouping of teams good enough to make the College Football Playoff. The talent within the SEC still ranks among the best in the sport as a whole.
In recent years, there has been a bit of a shift from the notion that the SEC is the unquestioned top conference in the United States. Big Ten teams have won the last three National Championships.

This past season was a rough one for the SEC. Alabama was embarrassed by eventual top dog Indiana (yes, you read that sentence correctly) in the Rose Bowl. Texas failed to make the CFP after accruing tons of preseason hype. LSU and Florida were abject train wrecks relative to expectations. Georgia also crashed out disappointingly in the Quarterfinals.
The field appears to be relatively wide-open in 2026. As FanDuel illustrates with its aim to predict preseason win-loss totals, many of these teams could be in close proximity to one another:
Alabama O/U: 8.5Â Arkansas O/U: 4.5Â Auburn O/U: 6.5Â Florida O/U: 7.5Â Georgia O/U: 9.5Â Kentucky O/U: 4.5Â LSU O/U: 9.5Â Mississippi State O/U: 4.5Â Missouri O/U: 6.5Â Oklahoma O/U: 7.5Â Ole Miss O/U: 7.5Â South Carolina O/U: 5.5Â Tennessee O/U: 6.5Â Texas O/U: 9.5Â Texas A&M O/U: 8.5Â Vanderbilt O/U: 6.5Â
Texas, LSU, and Georgia stand out as possible CFP contenders. The Longhorns will be buoyed by the possible 2027 No. 1 Overall pick in QB Arch Manning. Those in Baton Rouge are surely hoping Lane Kiffin can revive the program given what he just did in Oxford. Georgia returns QB Gunner Stockton and a very talented roster top-to-bottom.

Alabama is in a very fascinating situation. Kalen DeBoer could severely be in danger of losing his job if the Crimson Tide miss out on a playoff spot — particularly after losing to Indiana by 35 points this past January.
The bulk of the SEC appears to be highly competitive on paper with no obvious bottom-feeder. There might not be an elite team from this conference in 2026-27. However, the depth is certainly present.
