Pro Football Focus once again hopped back in the time machine and traveled to the 2009 NFL draft to reselect the first round using hindsight and the PFF grading system as their guide. So, who did the Jacksonville Jaguars come away with this time?

Following a 5-11 season in 2008, the Jaguars held the eighth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Originally, they selected Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe, but in the redraft, PFF had the Jaguars taking Ohio State safety Malcolm Jenkins.

“2009 was Reggie Nelson’s last season in Jacksonville, so with the benefit of hindsight, Jenkins would have been a great player for the Jaguars here,” wrote PFF. “Jenkins was up-and-down during his first five years with the Saints, but in Philadelphia, he recorded five straight seasons with 72.0-plus PFF overall grades. He was also an incredible leader on the back end for some great defenses.”

Jenkins would end up going 14th overall in the actual 2009 NFL draft to the New Orleans Saints, where he spent his first five NFL seasons and his last two as well.

Jenkins had a long 13-year career, which included playing in 199 games, with 191 starts. He would win two Super Bowls, one with New Orleans and another with Philadelphia, was a three-time Pro Bowler, a second-team All-Pro in 2010, and was named the NFLPA’s Alan Page Community Award winner in 2016.

Jenkins finished his career with 21 interceptions, 110 pass deflections, 20 forced fumbles, and over 1,000 total tackles.

Monroe, meanwhile, would play seven NFL seasons, four-plus of which came with the Jaguars before he was traded to Baltimore during the 2013 season. He finished his career making 90 starts and appearing in 93 games.

In PFF’s redraft, Monroe ended up going 26th overall to the Ravens.

“Monroe was the No. 8 overall pick in this draft, and though his career didn’t match the expectations of a top-10 tackle, he still deserves to be a first-rounder in our redraft,” PFF wrote. “He earned PFF overall grades above 80.0 in three straight years between 2011-2013.”
