REHOBETH, Ala. (WTVY) -Chris Mendez told an overflow crowd that his son came to him several years ago wanting to play football.
Mendez promised he and his wife would support Gabriel if he took care of life’s responsibilities.
Since then, Chris said he has prioritized faith, family, future and football, with football the least important.

On Thursday night, Gabriel Mendez signed an agreement to play college football at Maryville, a legendary school established in the Smoky Mountains in 1918.
He was awarded the Covenant Stone Scholarship at the Tennessee school, which is named after the campus “Covenant Stone,” symbolizing the college’s commitment to scholarship, respect, integrity and service.
“I want to thank all my friends for their support,” Gabriel told those gathered to wish him well, heaping extra praise for his Rehobeth High School coaches.
According to a media statement, during his senior season at Rehobeth High School, Mendez compiled six sacks, 60 tackles (26 solo, 34 assists), one touchdown reception, two blocked field goals and one blocked punt for the Rebels.

His honors include the Summer 2024 Exact Sports Watchlist, a 2025 Exact Sports All-American Watchlist nominee, 2025 Senior Team Captain, 2025 Most Effort Team Award and the 2025 Community Service Scholarship. He is also a member of the Rebels track and field team and competes in multiple events.
