NFL free agent signings continue to pour in today. Follow along with all of the latest news here.

If the flurry of NFL signings wasn’t enough at the start of free agency this week for NFL fans, a homecoming via trade may be the ticket to a banner week of player movement.

Quarterback Geno Smith is returning to the New York Jets after the Las Vegas Raiders traded him for a swap of seventh-round selections in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Smith comes back to the team that picked him in the second round, No. 39 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. He was the second quarterback selected in the draft that year behind EJ Manuel (No. 16 overall to Buffalo).

Smith spent four years with the Jets before stints with the Giants (2017), Los Angeles Chargers (2018), Seattle Seahawks (2019-2024) and Raiders (2025). He’s reportedly excited to be back with the team that called his name in Round 2 of the NFL draft more than a decade ago.

“It’s like this full circle moment for me, honestly,” Smith said on Josina Anderson’s The Exhibit Show today. “I can remember my last touchdown was to Quincy Enunwa right there at MetLife Stadium playing the Ravens the day I tore my ACL. That began my journey and it all led me back here where it all started.”

Smith said he’s already been in contact with Jets coach Aaron Glenn. He first heard about the trade a couple of days ago.

“I got some wind of it that there would potentially be a trade in the air, in the atmosphere,” Smith said. “I was hoping that the Raiders would give me a chance to kind of weigh my options which they did and ultimately I decided I want to go back to New York.”

The Jets are in the second season under Glenn, with an almost entirely new coaching staff. Smith comes in after New York finished the 2025 season with the worst-ranked passing offense in the NFL. Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook all started at least four games for the team.

Smith now returns to the Jets as another veteran option for the team after a tough 2025 season in Las Vegas.

“He’s got a real plan and I believe in the GM and everyone over there,” Smith said. “Just to be a part of that is going to be special. It’s kind of like a movie, kind of like a movie script.”
