The San Francisco 49ers have plenty of cap space to make their desired offseason roster moves, but they still could use some extra space if they’re aiming for another big move.

While they’ve already added Osa Odighizuwa and Mike Evans, along with depth in Vederian Lowe at offensive tackle, the 49ers could still be in store for more additions this offseason.

Fortunately for the 49ers, there’s a way to get more cap space. As Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports, the 49ers have worked out a contract restructure with Nick Bosa that will save the 49ers over $17 million in cap space this season.

49ers to save over $17M amid Nick Bosa contract move

“The 49ers did a simple restructure on Nick Bosa’s contract, clearing $17.172 million in 2026 cap space,” Pelissero reports. “Bosa is still due $23.18 million this season. His 2027 cap number is now a whopping $54,866,753.”

This contract restructure for the 49ers is a very common one used by teams around the NFL to save cap space. While it’s pushing more money into the future, the player isn’t losing anything and is simply helping the team build a better roster.

For the 49ers’ purposes, that extra $17 million could go towards a few more additions, or a major splash in free agency or a trade.

A blockbuster deal for Maxx Crosby or Jonathan Grennard could be in play, especially now with all of the cap savings they just got from this Bosa restructure.

They could also look to bring back Jauan Jennings to pair with Evans and Ricky Pearsall. Whatever the 49ers do going forward, they will have the cap space to make such a move work.

While the future cap hit is going to be a tricky problem for the 49ers, they will have the option to extend Bosa and further spread out the cap hit, or agree to another restructure to push more money into the future.

This cap-savings move is a smart one for the 49ers, and even if it might not directly lead to a major addition or two, it will give the 49ers the flexibility to make a splash if the right opportunity arises in the coming days, weeks, and months.
