The Miami Dolphins added depth and a possible No. 2 wide receiver to their roster on Friday with the signing of Jalen Tolbert to another one-year deal in this year’s free agent market, orchestrated by new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

Miami’s new head executive adds the 6-foot-1 Tolbert, who has 4.49 speed and spent his first four years in the league with the Dallas Cowboys, who selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft

Let’s meet Miami’s newest target, who is also very familiar with their new quarterback.

Closeness with Malik Willis

Tolbert has ties to Miami’s new potential franchise quarterback, Malik Willis. Tolbert and Willis were in the same 2022 draft class and developed a connection during their Senior Bowl process. The two already have a rapport, and Miami made their new quarterback happy just days after joining the Dolphins.

Versatility at WR

Tolbert can play both outside and the slot, and spent 196 snaps on the inside for the Cowboys last season, which accounted for 42.9% of his work. He runs crisp routes and can be a vertical threat while having contested catch ability, making him a well-rounded target for Willis.

Nose for the end zone

While lost a bit in the shuffle in 2025 with incumbent number one target CeeDee Lamb and the addition of George Pickens, Tolbert had his best season in 2024, as he led Dallas in touchdowns with seven. He was also second behind Lamb at the receiver position in receptions with 49 that season, and second on the team overall with 610 receiving yards.

South Alabama Star

Spending four seasons in South Alabama of the Sun Belt Conference, his senior season was special. He led the conference in receiving yards and finished sixth in the nation with 1,474 in 2021. He also led the conference that season with 82 catches and yards per reception at 18.0.
