The Philadelphia Eagles failed to retain Jaelan Phillips in NFL free agency and are now searching for answers on the edge. That answer could come in the shape of former Florida Gators linebacker Jonathan Greenard.
The Vikings have reportedly made the two-time Pro-Bowler available for trade, which creates an intriguing scenario for the 28-year-old. Greenard’s most productive stretch came in 2023 and 2024 when he recorded over a dozen sacks in each campaign. Possessing an explosive first step and relentless motor, the 6-foot-3-inch, 295-pound Greenard is versatile with both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that the Eagles have been in contact with Greenard’s camp and the two sides have discussed an extension if a trade becomes imminent. The Eagles missed out on other targets such as Bradley Chubb, who recently signed with the Buffalo Bills, and Trey Hendrickson, who was acquired by the Baltimore Ravens just days ago.
Due to salary cap constraints, the Minnesota franchise seeks financial relief this offseason, and moving on from Greenland could be part of those cost-cutting measures. The team is currently using 75% of their cap on just 10 players, including WR Justin Jefferson ($38.9M), OL Brian O’Neill ($23.2M) and OL Christian Darrisaw ($23.1M)
Greenard transferred to Florida from Louisville in 2018; the next season, he would lead the SEC in sacks with 9.5 and tackles for loss with 15.5. The Hiram, Georgia, native was also selected First-Team All-SEC. He was later taken 90th overall in the 3rd round of the 2020 draft by the Houston Texans.
