The Washington Commanders have been considered as winners during NFL Free Agency after signing a massive number of free agents, including Van Jefferson and Dyami Brown, which may spell the end of breakout candidate Luke McCaffrey. With the team’s recent signings, it’s hard to envision that McCaffrey will have a large role in this offense. Selected as a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the former Rice and Nebraska product emerged as a solid slot receiver for quarterback Jayden Daniels when the team’s offense battled several injuries. Now, the Commanders have help coming in, and with Brandon Aiyuk still on their radar, the future looks bleak for McCaffrey.
Former Commanders Third Rounder Luke McCaffrey May Be “Sleeper” Trade Piece During 2026 NFL Draft
Fellow teammates, Terry McLaurin and Jaylin Lane, are also on the roster, so that only tells you that the team has a “crowded” receiver room. There won’t be enough room for every receiver to stay on the active roster, so it shouldn’t be surprising if McCaffrey is viewed as a “sleeper” trade candidate during this upcoming NFL Draft. Despite suffering a season-ending collarbone injury to end his 2025 campaign, he has the talent to turn into one of the most elusive receivers in today’s game.
It will likely be McLaurin, Aiyuk, Jefferson, Brown and McCaffrey just barely making the cut in a possible battle against Lane, depending on how the team wants the depth to be. Still, Commanders GM Adam Peters has a strong vision for what McCaffrey could do. However, that will be hard to do when he won’t be getting much playing time, and these three teams may call for the receiver.
Potential Landing Spots
Los Angeles Chargers
As expected, the Los Angeles Chargers haven’t made any drastic moves during NFL Free Agency. The Chargers still have a massive hole at the receiver position, and with the team quietly shopping Quentin Johnston, the team could trade for McCaffrey. Ladd McConkey is one of the best pass-catchers in this wideout room, but it’s time for the Chargers to bring in some true playmakers that elevate the offense to help Justin Herbert.
The team tried to get DK Metcalf last offseason, but it was before he joined the Steelers. Most recently, the team was in the mix for Eagles star, AJ Brown. However, it’s not expected that they will meet the demands of Philadelphia, so acquiring McCaffrey sounds a little more strategic and realistic for the Chargers.
Indianapolis Colts
Meanwhile, the Colts also have a hole in the aerial attack. Alec Pierce signed a massive contract that made him one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. Unfortunately, that came at the expense of Michael Pittman Jr., who left for the Steelers. If the Colts are interested, Pierce and McCaffrey sound like a sweet duo that could emerge as an explosive threat in terms of speed.
Chicago Bears
After trading DJ Moore to Buffalo, the Bears still have a hole in the receiver room. The team also lost Olamide Zaccheaus, who returned to Atlanta. This means the roster is in need of a solid slot weapon to help Caleb Williams in short slant scenarios that can help Luther Burden and Rome Odunze. McCaffrey won’t light up the field, but he has a decent chance to thrive under the vision of Ben Johnson.
