Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters went into free agency with a lot of holes to fill. Washington had holes throughout its roster, especially on defense. Peters went to work, landing multiple pass rushers, a linebacker, a cornerback, and a safety just on defense. Offensively, the Commanders signed a tight end, two wide receivers and two running backs.
All of those moves were in addition to retaining some of their own free agents, such as quarterback Marcus Mariota, and extending left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

While free agency will continue for months, the bulk of the heavy lifting is done. The Commanders still have some holes, but they’re not as glaring. While the wide receiver and center positions are the most discussed, Washington still needs cornerback help, even after signing Amik Robertson.
The 2026 NFL Draft is next month. Washington could take almost any position outside of a quarterback. One position to watch is cornerback. So, it’s no surprise that the Commanders have scheduled a pre-draft visit with LSU All-American cornerback Mansoor Delane, per Ryan Fowler.
The 6-foot-0, 187-pound Delane is a native of nearby Silver Spring, Maryland, and played at Virginia Tech before transferring to LSU in 2025. Delane had a phenomenal final season, earning first-team All-SEC honors, in addition to being named a unanimous All-American.

Here’s NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on Delane:
Delane is one of the top cornerbacks in a CB-rich draft. He excels in press coverage, altering release timing with punches and slides. Smooth hips and efficient footwork keep him connected in man coverage, while his processing allows for quick transitions in off-man and short zone looks. He has good top-end speed for vertical phasing but is inconsistent turning to find the football. While he locks in on the route at times, he’s rarely oblivious to the quarterback’s actions, allowing him to slam catch windows shut and play the football. He played through a core muscle injury for much of the 2025 season and still performed at an elite level. Delane’s emergence over the past two years might be indicative of what’s to come, as he’s shown lockdown potential.
While many have an edge rusher, Sonny Styles, Jeremiyah Love, or a wide receiver penciled in to Washington with the No. 7 overall pick, don’t rule out Delane. The Commanders have spent second-round picks on cornerbacks in each of the last two drafts: Mike Sainristil (2024) and Trey Amos (2025).
