The New York Giants have waited out the free agent market at wide receiver and that patience has helped them land another wide receiver with explosive upside for Jaxson Dart and the offense.
Darnell Mooney has agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth up to a maximum of $10 million, a source told NorthJersey.com and The Record, although the expectation is that the deal itself will be of tremendous value to the Giants when the financial details are made official.

The Giants agreed to terms with wide receiver Calvin Austin III on a 1-year deal worth $1.5 million, NorthJersey.com and The Record previously reported. So with Austin and now Mooney added to the Dart-led offense with tight end Isaiah Likely as a big get early in the first wave of free agency, team brass has managed to improve the cast around Dart without splurging for the bigger names on the market.

Darnell Mooney: The scouting report
Mooney, 28, is all about vertical speed and explosiveness, as evidenced by his 13.8 yards per reception stat line. He was released by the Falcons for salary cap reasons last week. His production dipped last year (32 catches for 443 yards), but some of that was due to inconsistent quarterback play with injuries to Michael Penix Jr. and the up-and-down play of Kirk Cousins.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder had 64 catches for 992 yards in his first year with the Falcons.
Darnell Mooney: We’ve seen his best with Matt Nagy
Mooney had his best NFL season with Matt Nagy as his head coach in Chicago (81 catches, 1,055 yards). They’ll reunite with Big Blue with Nagy as offensive coordinator and it certainly is appealing with the man who knew how to get the most out of Mooney with the Bears in 2021 will be calling the shots here.
Darnell Mooney: Where new WR fits in offense with Jaxson Dart
Mooney and Austin will compete for snaps in two-wide receiver sets with Darius Slayton opposite Malik Nabers, especially if Likely emerges as a flex weapon at tight end and in the slot. It’s more speed than the Giants have had at the position, so the threat to help Dart open up the passing game with more deep shots is present. There will be great competition between Mooney, Austin and Slayton for opportunities.

Mooney was second in the NFL in catches of 20 or more yards behind Vikings star Justin Jefferson just two years ago.
