The Denver Broncos have added yet another former quarterback to their coaching staff.

When Sean Payton announced his 2026 coaching staff last week, among the promotions was offensive quality control coach J.D. Johnson. He was a three-star prospect out of Pinnacle High School (Phoenix) in 2019 who initially committed to Michigan before being forced to retire from playing with a heart issue.

After hanging up his cleats, Johnson took a student assistant job with the Wolverines that included coaching up the school’s QBs. Following his stint at Michigan, Johnson served as a scouting assistant in Denver last year, according to the Denver Post. He’s now been promoted to an OQC position.

The Broncos have five former QBs on staff as Johnson joins head coach Sean Payton (Eastern Illinois), offensive coordinator Davis Webb (California), quarterbacks coach Logan Kilgore (Middle Tennessee State) and fellow OQC coach Kyle Kempt (Iowa State).
