The San Francisco 49ers have been fairly active in the early parts of the new league year, as they’ve re-signed some players from their 2025 roster, brought in free agents from outside the building and completed a trade.
Among those outside free agents that San Francisco signed last week is offensive lineman Brett Toth, who could play an important role for the team in 2026.
Before he even steps on the field for a practice in a 49ers jersey, let’s take this opportunity to learn more about him. Here are a few things fans should know about Toth.
United States Military Academy
After graduating from West Ashley High School in Charleston, South Carolina, Toth joined the United States Military Academy, studying physics and nuclear engineering. He became the first player in the history of Army’s football team to play in the Senior Bowl.

Toth has played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018. However, he’s almost moved as much on the field as he has off of it, as he’s taken snaps at left guard, center, right guard and right tackle since entering the NFL.
Potential role in San Francisco
San Francisco started Spencer Burford, Ben Bartch and Connor Colby for games at left guard last season, but with the first two still unsigned and the last struggling in 2025, Toth could be in line to start there.
If the 49ers add someone else, Toth could be a great backup with his versatility to play all five spots if necessary.
