As the Pittsburgh Steelers’ search for their next quarterback continues, one potential candidate seems to be on the move soon. Anthony Richardson, selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, is looking for a new home this offseason.
After a tumultuous and injury-riddled first few seasons in the league, the Colts are gearing up for a trade in the near future, according to ESPN’s Colts reporter Stephen Holder.
Update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who is available via trade. No deal is imminent, per multiple sources. There are interested teams, but the dust is still settling from free agency.
One particular team to monitor: the Green Bay Packers.

He recently tweeted that while no trade is imminent, several teams are monitoring the situation and gauging price. For the Steelers, who have only Mason Rudolph and Will Howard on the roster, it seems logical that they could be among the interested teams.
While Richardson doesn’t necessarily fit the mold of a Mike McCarthy quarterback, he does have something that the new head coach looks for: mobility. During a coaching clinic he conducted when he was with the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy emphasized the importance of being able to escape the pocket “five to six” times a game. As the game has evolved, that number has only increased.
That coaching philosophy is even more evident when you examine the quarterbacks he has coached throughout his career. Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers and even Brett Favre all could move the chains and make plays outside of that pocket. Richardson would definitely be the best scrambling quarterback McCarthy has ever coached, with insane athletic traits, running a 4.43 40-yard dash at 244 pounds.
It’s everything else that needs to be cleaned up for Richardson from the processing to his footwork, and while McCarthy does have the reputation of being a quarterback whisperer, Colts head coach Shane Steichen is also known for his magic coaching the position.
It’s sort of like when your friend starts dating someone with obvious red flags, but convinces you that they can fix them. Maybe they’re right, and all they needed was a little T.L.C. at the Mike McCarthy QB camp, or maybe their flaws are just their flaws.
In fairness, Richardson is raw, playing in only 17 career NFL games and 24 college games, so there definitely is more meat on the bone. Additionally, it is noteworthy that Holder is reporting the Packers could be interested. After seeing the reclamation project they did with Malik Willis, Matt LaFleur might have a good eye for this type of thing.
With a weak quarterback draft class and a weaker free agency pool, I’d at least kick the tires on Richardson for a late-round pick to see if there’s anything there.
