The San Francisco 49ers had four linebackers hitting free agency this offseason, including Curtis Robinson, Eric Kendricks, Garret Wallow and Luke Gifford.
Last week, San Francisco re-signed Wallow and Gifford for the 2026 season, leaving Kendricks and Robinson available to join other teams. They also reunited with Dre Greenlaw, who left last offseason for a deal with the Denver Broncos but was cut after just one year.
With Greenlaw’s return, there was a question of what number he was going to wear in his second stint with the 49ers, as Gifford took over the number last year and made the Pro Bowl for his special teams contributions.
However, Gifford cleared everything up on social media over the weekend, saying that he’s giving up the number for Greenlaw, and the returning linebacker shared his appreciation for the move.
That’s just a classy move by Gifford, but that’s totally expected from the veteran. Hopefully, Greenlaw gets him something really nice for Christmas.
