Uncertainty remains an issue at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, particularly regarding the status of Deshaun Watson heading into next season.

While there’s been plenty of speculation about whether the Browns might move in a different direction, one NFL insider said that Watson still remains part of the conversation for the starting role.

Adam Schefter addressed the questions surrounding Cleveland’s quarterback situation. Despite the rumors and questions about the team’s plans, Schefter said that some around the league believe Watson could still end up starting when the 2026 season begins.

“There are people out there who believe that Deshaun Watson is gonna be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns on opening day,” Schefter said.

Watson’s time in Cleveland has been filled with downs since the Browns made the blockbuster trade to acquire him and later signed him to a massive guaranteed contract. Injuries and inconsistent play have prevented the former star from performing at the level the team expected when it made the investment.

Off-field issues have also been a problem.

Because of that, questions have continued to come up about whether Cleveland might explore other options at quarterback. The Browns drafted Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders less than a year ago, and both started at times last season.

Still, Schefter made it clear that the situation is far from decided.

“We will see how that situation unfolds,” Schefter added.

For now, the Browns appear to be evaluating all possibilities as they prepare for the upcoming season. At this point, that’s the smart move.
