Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams have connected plenty in the past. It appears it was possible for them to unite under Mike McCarthy once more with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a report by Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

“Per a league source, the Rams — while talking about a possible trade for (A.J.) Brown — were pursuing the possibility of trading Adams,” Florio wrote Sunday. “The Rams presumably were hoping to get a deal done by today, when a fully-guaranteed $6 million roster bonus came due. And the payment of the bonus likely means they’ll keep Adams and his $18 million base salary.”

There is no indication that Omar Khan and the Steelers were interested in swapping for Adams, who according to Statmuse has reeled in 689 passes from Rodgers during his career, picking up 8,444 yards and scoring 76 touchdowns.

Adams led the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions last season after signing a two-year, $44 million deal with the Rams last offseason. The Steelers acquired DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks on the same day.

Adams’ cap hit for next fall would’ve been $4 million more than what Spotrac estimates Michael Pittman Jr.’s will be ($24 million). After acquiring Pittman from the Indianapolis Colts, it would’ve been nearly impossible for Khan to justify investing so much in receivers.

McCarthy drafted Adams in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Fresno State product grew into Rodgers’ preferred target over the next eight seasons, then was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. By 2024, a frustrating time in Sin City led Adams to angle his way to the New York Jets to re-join Rodgers, with whom he played another 11 games — totaling 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns — before leaving for the West Coast.

Rodgers still hasn’t decided on whether he’ll play another season for the Steelers, though the team continues to wait.
