INDIANAPOLIS — Juanyeh Thomas carries a deep, enduring belief that there’s more to his game than anybody realizes after a simple glance at his career statistics.

Thomas believes he has the versatility to play any role and the smarts to handle the workload that comes with it, the kind of skill set that could fit perfectly in the diverse, evolving system run by Indianapolis defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

That’s why Thomas chose the Colts over an offer to return to the Cowboys, the only team he’s known in three NFL seasons.

“It was a decision for me to make to go on and spread my wings,” Thomas said.

Thomas might have been on the verge of a breakout last season.

For the first time in his four seasons in Dallas, Thomas was making regular starts, proving to the Cowboys in the process he could be more than the depth piece he’d been to that point.

Forced into the lineup by an injury to former Colts safety Malik Hooker, Thomas played 256 snaps over four games, making 20 tackles while showcasing a knack for closing down on ballcarriers in the open field.

Then the migraines started again.

A nerve issue that Thomas first felt at the beginning of the year came roaring back, causing debilitating migraine headaches. With the headaches came visual issues — migraines can cause everything from an “aura” in a person’s vision to blind spots or blurry vision — and even though Thomas tried wearing goggles to focus his eyesight, the problems eventually forced him to injured reserve for the rest of the season.

“Honestly, it was really tough on me, but I literally serve a God that makes no mistakes in my life,” Thomas said. “It was a blessing in disguise, because it really sat me down and made me realize how life is very, very precious. Going through it was tough, but I leaned on God.”

Thomas’ faith helped him deal with the emotional and spiritual implications of a difficult injury.

Medically, Thomas found a solution.

“I always knew there was a treatment to help it but in the moment, you feel so lost,” Thomas said. “Getting the treatment, it put a smile on my face.”

Thomas didn’t know what to expect heading into free agency.

While a number of teams called his agent, Thomas spent his time on the golf course, working on his game to take his mind off the decision until it had to be made.

Thomas ended up choosing a team with an opening in the starting lineup.

Former Colts strong safety Nick Cross signed a two-year deal worth up to $14 million to go home to Washington, leaving an opening in the Indianapolis starting lineup that does not have a clear successor.

Indianapolis has a few options. The Colts liked what they saw from 2025 seventh-rounder Hunter Wohler in training camp, but he’s coming off a Lisfranc injury that cost Wohler his entire rookie season, and the team’s vision for Wohler includes stepping up to the second level as the team’s dime linebacker in obvious passing situations.

The Colts have also signed veteran strong safety Jonathan Owens, but at this point in his career, the 30-year-old Owens may be more of a special teamer who can provide experienced depth.

Colts free agency: Meet Mr. Simone Biles, Jonathan Owens; the Colts’ latest safety signing

Thomas believes he has the versatility Anarumo wants at the position.

Anarumo prioritizes flexibility, preferring safeties who can handle a variety of roles. Cross was excellent coming down into the box, but he was a classical strong safety, forcing Anarumo to keep playmaking star Camryn Bynum at free safety, rather than moving Bynum around to take advantage of a skill set that could make him a valuable chess piece.

The Colts have a different plan for Thomas.

“I’m going to be moved around a bit,” Thomas said. “I’ve been moved around in different spots my whole career. I’ve done played corner, I’ve done played nickel, I’ve done played free, I’ve done played strong.”

Thomas also sees himself as a leader.

A player who will be able to match and augment Bynum’s ability to direct traffic from the back end.

“Being a real quarterback on the back end of the defense,” Thomas said. “I’m a talker.”

Playing that role in Anarumo’s defense requires an ability to process information quickly. Anarumo tailors his game plan to his opponent every week, asking his defenders to learn a new system on the fly.

Thomas believes he’ll be right at home.

“I’m very, very smart,” Thomas said. “Once I have a read on something, I just go.”

The migraines stopped Thomas just as he was beginning to take off in 2025.

He believes he’ll be better than anybody expects in Indianapolis.
