As basketball season winds down, Hampton has turned its focus to spring football practice, opening a new chapter under first-year head coach Van Malone.
The Pirates held their first spring practice, marking Malone’s debut leading the program. He brings 23 years of coaching experience, including 18 at the Power Four level. Malone most recently served as passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach at Kansas State.
Hampton is coming off a challenging 2024 season, finishing 2-10 overall and 0-8 in CAA play. The roster featured a predominantly young group, a factor that remains central entering the spring.
Malone expressed enthusiasm about getting on the field for the first time with his team and views the program’s youth as a potential strength moving forward.
