The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are seeing another depth piece from their secondary move on in free agency, with defensive back Christian Izien signing with the Detroit Lions. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo was the first to report the news.

Izien originally joined Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers Scarlet Knights football and quickly worked his way onto the roster thanks to his versatility and physical style of play. However, as the Buccaneers continued to reshape their defensive backfield, Izien eventually found himself buried on the depth chart.

The emergence of players like Tykee Smith and Jacob Parrish made it increasingly difficult for him to carve out consistent playing time.

Both Smith and Parrish stepped into larger roles in the secondary, limiting the defensive snaps available for Izien. With those younger defensive backs establishing themselves in Tampa Bay’s defensive plans, Izien’s opportunities became more limited, making a fresh start elsewhere a logical move for both sides.

Now, the Lions will get a chance to see what the former undrafted defensive back can do with a new opportunity. Detroit has built a reputation in recent years for finding value in versatile defenders, and Izien’s ability to play multiple roles in the secondary could give him a chance to compete for snaps in their defensive system.

While Izien showed flashes during his time in Tampa Bay and proved he belonged on an NFL roster, the competition at his position ultimately made it difficult for him to maintain a consistent role. As the Lions look to add depth and versatility to their secondary, Izien will now get the opportunity to compete for a larger role while the Buccaneers continue moving forward with the younger defensive backs who climbed ahead of him on the depth chart.
