OZARK, Ala. (WTVY) – Ozark City Schools named Steve McLendon as the new head football coach for Carroll High School.
The appointment comes nearly a month after Jacob Kelley resigned from the position.
A 13-year NFL veteran, McLendon returns to Ozark to lead the Eagles program after graduating from Carroll High in 2004. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his professional career and won a Super Bowl championship.
The Troy University graduate also served as a four-time NFL captain and was a two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. He most recently coached at Buford High School in Georgia, where he worked with the defensive line and focused on leadership development.
“Ozark is where I was born and raised. To come back home is surreal. I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to coach at the very high school where I played,” McLendon said. “I am ecstatic about the opportunity to instill a different mindset and mentality—not just for the football program, but for the school and the community as well.”
Athletic Director Chris Logan said the school searched for a leader committed to stability and mentorship.
“We’re very fortunate to bring someone of Steve McLendon’s caliber to Ozark City Schools,” Logan said. “McLendon is a proven leader who understands the importance of building a lasting foundation for years to come.”
McLendon will begin meeting with current players and staff for off-season preparations.
