Washington legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green turned 66 years old last month. Now, Green wants to return to the football field. Yes, you read that correctly, Green wants to return to the field as a part of Team USA flag football.

While all of the attention was on the Fanatics Flag Football Classic this weekend, which also featured Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Green was in Chula Vista, California, with approximately 100 men and women, hoping to earn a spot on Team USA.

The goal is to earn an invitation to training camp in April and, hopefully, a spot on the 2026 national flag football squad, which will compete at the world championships later this year. The next step would be the 2028 Olympic games, in which flag football makes its debut.

“Darrell qualified through our digital combine. He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive,” said Callie Brownson, the senior director of high performance and national teams for USA football, Green told the Associated Press via Fox Sports. “Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look……….. He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week.”

Green has always been a rare athlete. Check this out from 2024:

Toward the end of his 20-year playing career, Green was famously timed at 4.2 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He was 40 years old.

A first-round pick by the Redskins in the 1983 NFL Draft, Green played all 20 of his NFL seasons in Washington. He was a three-time first-team All-Pro, a one-time second-team All-Pro, a seven-time Pro Bowler, a member of the 1990s NFL All-Decade team, the NFL 100th All-Anniversary team and was a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer in 2008.

“I’m going to give it my best, and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way,” Green said on the USA Football Instagram page, per Fox.

The Commanders officially retired Green’s No. 28 jersey during the 2024 season. No player wore Green’s No. 28 from his NFL retirement in 2002 until it was officially retired two years ago.
