New York Giants star player Cam Skattebo is being roasted by social media users for dismissing those with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and asthma during a recent interview.
Cam Skattebo isn’t the only professional athlete to face public criticism after voicing an unpopular opinion. NBA star Tyler Herro also sparked controversy in June 2025 after saying he was skeptical of the accuracy of historical accounts.

Cam Skattebo Dismisses CTE, Asthma As An ‘Excuse’ During Viral Interview, Sparking Pushback
While appearing on the “Bring the Juice” podcast, Skattebo raised eyebrows when he dismissed CTE, a very serious medical condition caused by repeated head injuries, calling it nothing more than “an excuse.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Skattebo, an Arizona State alum, also called asthma “fake,” adding that people with the condition should “breathe air.”
Skattebo was slammed almost instantly following his comments, with one user calling him a “MAGA scumbag,” while another blasted him and his “dumb” position.

Cam Skattebo Apologizes For ‘Tasteless’ Joke About CTE, Asthma In A Social Media Post
Following the pushback, Skattebo posted an apology, admitting he had a “lapse in judgment which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma.”
Skattebo explained that it was not his “intention” to dismiss the “seriousness of head injuries or asthma” before appearing to take accountability for his words.
“I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward,” he wrote. “Much love!!!”

Skattebo’s statement quickly circulated online, sparking further discussion and sarcastic replies from netizens.
“All good, we know it’s just the CTE talking,” someone wrote, while another said, “Too late, I already threw my inhaler away. If anything happens, my death is on your hands.”
“Your CTE probably caused the lapse in judgment,” a third said, prompting a fourth to write, “Wonder what caused that lapse in judgment? Maybe a degenerative brain issue caused by repeated head trauma?”

Cam Skattebo Used To Train For Football In A Peculiar Way
The reaction to Skattebo’s comments isn’t a surprise, as the NFL player’s mother previously said her son used to train in unusual ways.
“He would put his brother’s shoulder pads on, and he would run into telephone poles,” Becky Skattebo said in 2025, according to PEOPLE. “Once he got onto the field, it was no surprise the punishment he inflicted on his own body and everybody else.”
Elsewhere during the interview, Skattebo followed up on his training regimen, saying, “I’m the best running back in the country.”

“I used to put my brother’s helmet on all the time, and we used to play football in the living room together,” he continued.
Aaron Hernandez Suffered From CTE

According to The Blast, several notable NFL stars have suffered from CTE, including former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez.
The former athlete died by suicide in 2017 after being indicted for a double homicide in Boston, where two men were victims of a drive-by shooting.
In an interview, Hernandez’s former teammate, Rob Gronkowski, said he was unaware of Hernandez’s personal issues before he expressed his disappointment about his teammate’s legal woes.

“Like, why would you do that? We got the whole world in front of us. Especially you and I as a tandem, we’ve got the best team out there, everything. So, it was shocking,” he said.
In 2024, Shane Tamura died by suicide after killing four people in a mass shooting in New York City, per PEOPLE. Tamura reportedly claimed to have had CTE in a note left behind. In the letter, he also slammed the NFL for allegedly downplaying the seriousness of the condition.

Skattebo isn’t the only professional athlete to spark backlash after sharing unconventional claims. According to Complex, NBA star Herro went viral in 2025 after saying he doesn’t “believe in history.”
“You think history is a real thing?” the Miami Heat player asked during a livestream. “Nah, I don’t believe in history. No, I’m dead.”
As the conversation continued, Herro downplayed significant historical events, including the moon landing.
“No, I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe in anything that happened before 1950,” he said. “For real, like, how do we know? When did he come to the land or whatever?”
