The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t done yet in free agency under GM Omar Khan.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Steelers are signing veteran running back and special teams standout Travis Homer, shoring up the bottom of their roster ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Homer, a sixth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Miami (FL), spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Bears, where he played primarily on special teams.

Homer had just seven carries in three seasons in Chicago, including one for -2 yards last season under first-year head coach Ben Johnson.

He had one kick return for 29 yards last year, but played 163 special teams snaps, accounting for 63% of the Bears’ special teams snaps in 2025. Across his three seasons with the Bears, Homer saw just 87 offensive snaps but played 582 special teams snaps.

Adding Homer shores up special teams for the Steelers, who had some glaring holes there under new coordinator Danny Crossman following the losses of some key special teams pieces in free agency, most notably former captain Miles Killebrew to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Prior to his time in Chicago, Homer was a reserve running back and kick returner for the Seahawks. Across four seasons with Seattle, Homer had 83 carries for 453 yards and a touchdown. He added another 52 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns.

Homer also had 18 kick returns for 444 yards and a touchdown, including a 44-yard kickoff return for a score in 2021.

Our scouting Homer report in 2019 when he was coming out of Miami (FL) highlighted him as a strong third-down running back with his ability to catch the football out of the backfield.

Adding Homer deepens the Steelers’ running backs room and potentially puts second-year pro Kaleb Johnson in a bit of a bind. Homer won’t threaten to take away touches from Johnson offensively, which will already be limited behind Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle.

But Homer’s addition blocks Johnson from potentially carving out a special teams role in Year 2. Of course, Johnson did have the kickoff-return blunder against the Seattle Seahawks last season, leading to his benching, so maybe that was never in the cards. Homer’s presence will create another roadblock for Johnson as things are starting to stack against him.
