Khan previously attended Georgia’s Pro Day with head coach Mike McCarthy last week. Ohio State has a plethora of prospects that could intrigue the Steelers, including a number of potential first-round picks. LB Sonny Styles, S Caleb Downs, WR Carnell Tate, and DL Kayden McDonald have all been projected as first-round selections throughout the draft process. The Steelers also met with McDonald and Tate at the NFL Combine, demonstrating their interest.
Khan and the Steelers also have a connection to a member of the Ohio State staff, as former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is now OSU’s offensive coordinator. Beyond the crop of first-round prospects, Ohio State also has CB Davison Igbinosun, TE Max Klare and EDGE Caden Curry, among others, who could all hear their names called in April.
While at Georgia, Khan and the Steelers brass had a Pro Day dinner with WR Zachariah Branch. It wouldn’t be a surprise to hear about another Pro Day dinner in Columbus if Khan attends as expected.
The Steelers’ scouting staff has been hot on the Pro Day trail as usual, but the team hasn’t sent its bigwigs, Khan and Mike McCarthy, to many stops. McCarthy’s presence on the Pro Day trail has been notably less than that of Mike Tomlin during his tenure as the Steelers’ head coach. We’ll find out if McCarthy will be in attendance with Khan tomorrow.
Pittsburgh has given itself flexibility in the draft with its free-agency moves, and theoretically, all four projected OSU first-round picks could be in play for the Steelers. Drafting Tate and especially Styles would likely require a pretty significant trade-up, but off-ball linebacker and wide receiver are two positions the Steelers very well could address in April. McDonald is the most likely prospect to fall to Pittsburgh’s No. 21 pick, and he could be the selection if the team wants to add a true interior plugger.
Regardless, it’s notable that Khan is expected to attend, and it’ll be worth monitoring Ohio State prospects closely in the run-up to the draft, especially given Pittsburgh’s prior interest at the Combine.
