NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Titans star Jeffery Simmons surprised a Nashville family on Sunday by announcing that he would pay for their mortgage for the next year.
He made the announcement at a Habitat for Humanity ribbon-cutting ceremony, where eight families received their homes through the organization. The homes were partially funded through the Titans’ ONE Community Home Field Advantage Catalyst Fund.
Video from the event shows Simmons getting emotional as he described the donation to the family as “my gift to you.”
“I know what it feels like to watch my mom struggle,” he told them as he started to cry. “…I’m going to pay your rent for a year. … I know what it feels like. My mom raised five kids and she did it alone, with no help. I’ve never seen my mom complain.”
A $120,000 grant has allowed Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville to support the construction of 12 houses, four of which welcomed in families last month. In Sunday’s ceremony, the Titans also provided each family with a custom gift basket packed with housewarming essentials.
