Former Auburn football quarterback TJ Finley has been the butt of many transfer portal jokes in recent years. However, he is making one more move in his football career that is unlike any of the others he has made.

CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer reported Wednesday that Finley was no longer a part of the football program at Incarnate Word, the seventh program he has been a part of. Later in the day, Pete Nakos of On3 shared the reason for Finley’s departure. Nakos reports that Finley will take a step forward in his football career by declaring for the NFL draft, which is set to take place next month.

Since last playing for Auburn in 2022, Finley has been a part of five programs: Texas State, Western Kentucky, Tulane, Georgia State, and Incarnate Word. He played in 13 games for the Texas State Bobcats in 2023, where he passed for 3,439 yards and 24 touchdowns. Following a year in San Marcos, he played a total of seven games during the 2024 and 2025 seasons at Western Kentucky and Georgia State, respectively. He briefly joined the Tulane program ahead of the 2025 season, but was suspended indefinitely following an arrest in April of last year.

Finley addressed his many moves in a now-deleted Instagram post shortly after committing to Incarnate Word.

“The last two years have been the most challenging of my life. Balancing new fatherhood, injuries, and adversity off the field has been tested in ways football never could,” Finley wrote. “Through it all, my love for the game never left. Football is who I am. I still love competing, leading, and playing at the highest level. … I’m focused, healthy, and motivated. I look forward to finishing my career at a university that gives me an opportunity to compete, lead and finish strong. The story isn’t over.”
