The Washington Commanders are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon following his visit to the team on Thursday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Witherspoon, who spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, reunites with general manager Adam Peters, who was with the San Francisco 49ers when the team drafted Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, 31, re-signed with the Rams on a one-year deal last March, making the 2025 season his third year with the team. However, a broken clavicle limited his season to just six games.
He originally joined the Rams in 2023 after the Steelers released him. Witherspoon spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with Pittsburgh after the team acquired him in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, sending its fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

It didn’t take long for Witherspoon to make an impact with the Steelers as he registered three interceptions in three starts. That earned him another two-year contract with the team.
That production looked like it would continue in 2022 as he entered the year penciled in as one of the team’s starting outside cornerbacks, but injuries plagued him once again as he dealt with a nagging hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve twice.
A third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Witherspoon has recorded 243 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, 60 passes defensed, 13 interceptions and one touchdown in his professional career.
