GREEN BAY — Jordan Love understands that his life as he knows it is going to be very different — in the best possible way — in a few weeks.
“It’s one of those things that haven’t fully wrapped my head around,” the Green Bay Packers quarterback said of he and his wife, Ronika, expecting their first child — a daughter — next month. “And I’m sure once that day comes of having our little one, it’ll change completely.”
Love’s professional life has undergone some upheaval as well this offseason, with free-agent departures on his side of the ball and comings and goings inside the quarterback room, too.
“There’s been a lot of change,” Love said earlier this week, before distributing cleats to Wisconsin sports teams as part of his Hands of 10ve Foundation initiative that supplies teams with footwear here and in his native Bakersfield, Calif., for every touchdown he’s responsible for during the season. “That’s the craziest part.”
Not only did Romeo Doubs, the wide receiver Love has targeted more than any other over the last three years and his workout partner in California over the past several offseasons, depart for the New England Patriots, but two longtime offensive line starters — left tackle Rasheed Walker, who went to the Carolina Panthers as a free agent, and Pro Bowl left guard-turned-center Elgton Jenkins, who was released and subsequently signed with the Cleveland Browns — went elsewhere as well.
“Watching all the moves around the NFL and seeing where all these guys are going, our team has made a lot of changes,” Love said. “There’s going to be some new faces, and definitely some guys will be missing that are moving on to different teams.
“It’s expected every offseason. You go into it understanding that’s going to be the case. [But] I’m missing the guys that are going elsewhere, and obviously excited to welcome some new faces.”
While the Packers will have two new coordinators — on defense with Jonathan Gannon and on special teams with Cam Achord — the biggest changes on the offensive staff have happened in the quarterback room, where Sean Mannion left to become the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator and backup Malik Willis left to become the Miami Dolphins new starting quarterback after two years behind Love.
Luke Getsy, who was Love’s first quarterbacks coach in 2020 and 2021, is back in that role (with the additional title of assistant head coach/offense) after rejoining Matt LaFleur’s staff last year as a senior assistant.
“To have him back in the room is obviously a very familiar face. I’m excited for that, excited for Sean Mannion getting his opportunity to be offensive coordinator,” Love said. “And Malik, obviously I’m very excited for him, but I will indeed miss him.
“So, you know, it’s all it’s bittersweet — to be able to see these guys go places, and hopefully they have great success elsewhere, but it’s tough to see them go.”
Without Walker and Jenkins, the Packers are set to start 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan at left tackle, Aaron Banks at left guard, Sean Rhyan (who replaced an injured Jenkins last season) at center, second-year man Anthony Belton at right guard and Zach Tom at right tackle, assuming his late-season patellar tendon injury is fully healed in time for the start of the regular season.
At wide receiver, the Packers still have Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the top five spots on the depth chart.
So while Love, who finished the regular season having completed 66.3% of his passes for 3,381 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions (101.2 rating), will have to adjust to the changes, he also knows the cupboard is far from empty heading into the offseason program and organized team activity practices in May and June.
“They’re going to be missed for sure, those are guys who had a huge impact on us the past couple years,” Love said. “But in the receiver room, we’ve still got a lot of great weapons, a lot of guys who’ve played a lot of ball, and we know what they’re all about.
“Obviously in the O-line room, [even with] Rasheed leaving, Elton leaving, we’ve got guys that have played different positions. We’ll see where everybody ends up.
“But I’ve got a lot of confidence in those guys, and we’ll put in the work throughout OTAs once we get into training camp and make sure everybody’s dialed in and ready to go.”
