The Washington Commanders and general manager Adam Peters have some more work to do despite having a very busy NFL offseason to date.
Already, the Commanders have made a plethora of moves in NFL free agency. A few of the top additions are defensive end Odafe Oweh, running back Rachaad White, linebacker Leo Chenal, tight end Chig Okonkwo, and defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson.
Heading into the 2026 offseason, it was clear that Washington needed help at wide receiver. Two free agency additions were made to add new weapons for Jayden Daniels, with both Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson being signed.
That being said, the Commanders still need help at the position.
At this stage of the offseason in the second wave of free agency, Washington still has a few options on the table. The best potential target for the team has now been revealed.
Washington Commanders Linked to Potential Wide Receiver Target
CBS Sports analyst Zachary Pereles has named current San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as the Commanders’ best potential free agency target. He still remains a member of the 49ers, but is expected to be released soon.
“The Commanders were in on both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs but ended up with neither. They mostly focused on the defensive side in free agency,” Pereles wrote.
“The offensive free agents they added — Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson — arrived on cheap, one-year deals. Once the 49ers release him, Aiyuk is expected to be the next addition, but Washington could (and should) still do more.”
Aiyuk has a very close friendship with Daniels, further heating up the rumors between the two sides. He has reportedly been interested in joining Washington in recent history.
When San Francisco makes the move officially and releases Aiyuk, he is widely expected to sign a deal with the Commanders to provide Daniels another weapon.
Brandon Aiyuk Could Be the Piece That Unlocks the Offense
Throughout his NFL career, Aiyuk has shown flashes of star potential. He missed the entire 2025 season due to recovery from a torn ACL and differences with the 49ers.
In his 69 career games played, Aiyuk has racked up 294 receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Assuming he is back to full health, the 28-year-old wide receiver would be an excellent addition for Washington. He would form a lethal duo with current star wideout Terry McLaurin.
Expect to hear more news about Aiyuk in the near future. The 49ers are almost certainly not going to keep him around for the 2026 season, but they are in no hurry to let him walk to another team. When that happens, the Commanders should be able to make their big wide receiver splash.
