The NFL has moved past the frenzy of free agency and now shifts its focus to the draft. Teams are diving deep into their draft boards and strategizing for a variety of scenarios.
Among them, the Miami Dolphins possess an exceptional amount of draft capital. They appear well-positioned to build around their free agency acquisition at quarterback, Malik Willis.

But are they considering every possible scenario surrounding Willis? According to a new report, they may be making a rather surprising decision in their planning.
Planning for anything?
Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network revealed that while Willis is expected to be the starter in 2026, the team is also thinking long-term. The idea is to have someone consistently pushing the former Liberty product.
Wolfe described a scenario in which the Dolphins draft a rookie quarterback in 2026 as a developmental piece. If things with Willis don’t go as planned, they would have an alternative option ready.

This is a somewhat puzzling approach by the Dolphins. They just gave Willis a significant contract, yet there is already discussion about what happens if things don’t work out.

It almost mirrors the situation between Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons. Cousins signed a massive deal, only for the Falcons to draft Michael Penix shortly after.
While it doesn’t appear likely that the Dolphins would use a first-round pick on a quarterback, it still creates an intriguing dynamic. Does the organization lack full confidence in Willis?
Or is this simply a standard strategy in building depth at the game’s most important position? Time will tell what the Dolphins ultimately decide—and it may offer deeper insight into their true long-term vision.
