The Giants made another expected roster cut by waiving kicker Graham Gano on Sunday, a league source confirmed to Newsday.
The move wasn’t surprising after the team signed kicker Jason Sanders from the Dolphins in free agency. Gano played just 23 games over the last three seasons due to several injuries, including just five last season.
The Giants also freed up $4.5 million in salary cap space by releasing Gano.
Gano, 38, spent six seasons with the Giants after signing in 2020. He appeared in every game from 2020-22 and made 91.8% of his kicks during that span..
However, a knee injury limited him to eight games in 2023. A groin injury in 2024 caused him to miss six games. Last season, he injured his groin during warmups prior to the Giants’ Week 3 game against Kansas City.
In November, he went on injured reserve due to a herniated disc in his neck.
The Giants now turn to Sanders to lead the kicking battle that includes Ben Sauls, who the team signed after Gano went on IR. It’s part of a special teams overhaul led by new coach John Harbaugh that includes signing punter Jordan Stout and long snapper Zach Triner.
Evan Barnes covers the Giants for Newsday. He previously covered the Brooklyn Nets, Memphis football and the Memphis Grizzlies and also covered prep sports in Los Angeles.
