After spending the last three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, the team is likely to trade tight end Luke Schoonmaker during this upcoming draft. One source predicts that the Cowboys are going to move on from Schoonmaker, who is coming off an underwhelming 2025 campaign. With Pro Bowler Jake Ferguson not going anywhere and Brevyn Spann-Ford receiving more playing time due to his excellent production, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Cowboys dangle Schoonmaker on the trade block. Selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Michigan product hoped to carve out a role at least backing up for Ferguson, but he has underperformed in the past seasons in Dallas.
Cowboys May Trade Former Second-Round Bust Luke Schoonmaker – “Odd Man Out” Rumors Brewing
The Cowboys have already made several changes on defense, but it’s time for this team to evaluate the progress on what they want in their pass-catching unit. Unfortunately for Schoonmaker, Spann-Ford can block and catch the footballs in situational moments, which makes him a valuable asset to the Cowboys’ offensive scheme. If the Cowboys find a tight end they like in this year’s draft class on the second day, they could trade Schoonmaker to a new team the same weekend.
Dallas probably won’t command a top pick for Schoonmaker, but they should demand at least a sixth-round selection in return at minimum. Still, Schoonmaker is young and can produce at a high-level if given a new scenery with a different team. The Cowboys franchise tagged George Pickens and gave Feguson a contract extension just last year, so the team probably won’t invest their money in a tight end that’s not playing up to standards.
Possible Next Teams
Kansas City Chiefs
Despite veteran Travis Kelce returning, the Kansas City Chiefs must stabilize the tight end and grab a future replacement in this year’s draft. If all of the decent tight ends are off the board before the Chiefs select, they could trade for a low-stakes weapon that might have upside. The team has Noah Gray waiting for a larger role, but it wouldn’t hurt to get Schoonmaker in the mix. Schoonmaker won’t start, but it’s a chance for him to pair with Patrick Mahomes and see how he could fit in the culture that Kansas City has.
Baltimore Ravens
Meanwhile, the Ravens lost Isaiah Likely to the New York Giants in free agency. With Mark Andrews winning the starting job, the team must find a quality backup. Schoonmaker isn’t the most efficient option for the Ravens to get, but it’s a cheap get to see how he could fit with the team. Since the Ravens are more of a running and play-action type of team, Schoonmaker could find his role as a capable pass and run-blocker to open the holes for RB Derrick Henry.
Minnesota Vikings
While the quarterback situation between Kyler Murray, JJ McCarthy and Carson Wentz has garnered the most attention, they must upgrade the tight end position. No matter who is the leader for this offense, the Vikings should get another low-stakes weapon to help either one of these quarterbacks. Despite losing Jalen Nailor, the team didn’t add any receiver or replacement.
Current starting tight end TJ Hockenson took a paycut, which would make him a free agent next year. If the Vikings plan to let him leave, they could give Schoonmaker a shot to battle it out for a starting role this upcoming season.
