Saints coach Kellen Moore believes Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne can complement each other

  • March 30, 2026

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – When the Saints signed Travis Etienne, one of the NFL’s premier running backs in the peak of his career at age 27, in free agency, speculation rose about the future of Alvin Kamara in New Orleans.

As the Saints have made some decisions to move on or rework deals of older players, it appears for now that they plan to move forward featuring both Kamara and Etienne.

Speaking to members of the media Monday (March 30) at the NFL Owners’ Meeting, Moore said that he believes that the two running backs can complement each other “well” and that it’s on him to figure out how they fit in the game plan.

“He’s certainly on the roster and part of the running back room,” Moore said. “We feel fortunate that we were able to acquire Travis. But there’s a lot of work there to be had. It’s a great situation for us.”

Kamara, 30, will enter his 10th NFL season, and while still productive, injuries reduced his impact on the field last year as he totaled 471 yards on the ground. In 2024, Kamara produced his career best in rushing yards, 950 on the ground.

Etienne is entering his sixth NFL season and is coming off his third season surpassing 1,000 yards from the ground. Etienne has a physical, upright running style that could serve as a valuable contrast to Kamara’s ability to open up the field by using the sidelines.

Moore called both running backs “explosive” and said that you can find a role for anyone in today’s NFL.

Moore also said at the owner’s meeting that the Saints are holding discussions about a contract extension with wide receiver Chris Olave. Moore didn’t give more details about the discussions, but it appears that Olave will be incoming second-year quarterback Tyler Shough’s top target for the foreseeable future.

Last season, when playing with Shough, Olave caught 66 passes for 780 yards in the air and 6 touchdowns in 10 games, according to statmuse.com .
