The annual NFL league meetings are taking place this week in Phoenix, Arizona, which means every fan base will get to hear from their respective head coaches. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, it will be the first time new head coach Mike McCarthy has spoken to the media as Steelers’ head coach since his introductory press conference back in January.
With McCarthy came a new staff that was put together, with former Minnesota Vikings passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Angelichio being named offensive coordinator. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was asked about Angelichio, and he gave his former assistant a glowing review.
“Ange is a guy that I’ve coached with in multiple spots and multiple systems,” O’Connell said via Mark Kaboly. “And what always kept coming out was similar philosophical beliefs on how you attack people, specifically in the pass game, but Ange has a really good understanding of the run game [and] how to marry it together. How to marry the [play-action] pass and the keeper game to your base way of running the football. He’s been vital for me in the red zone over our four years together [in Minnesota]. So when you look at it, whether it’s situational football, early down success and how you tie it all together, he is so prepared for this opportunity and it’s long overdue.”
This will be the first time Angelichio has been an offensive coordinator at the NFL level. He has had many stops in the NFL as a tight ends coach, including with McCarthy in Green Bay from 2016-18.
