PHOENIX — The veteran options to fill the Colts’ most critical need dried up quickly.
By the time Baltimore pulled an abrupt about-face on Maxx Crosby and swooped in to sign Trey Hendrickson, the next best options in free agency were already gone, leaving Indianapolis with veterans Arden Key and Micheal Clemons, rotational players rather than starters who could transform the edge rush.

Indianapolis can still try to take advantage of the right situation if a trade possibility becomes available, but the most obvious, Vikings pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, might be staying in Minnesota.
“I expect him to be part of our team,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said at the NFL’s annual meeting on Monday. “There’s always conversations. There’s conversations this week, there’s conversations throughout the offseason, and we’ll continue to attack things in different phases.”

Facing a need to get under the cap, the Vikings were reportedly fielding trade calls on Greenard before the start of free agency, but he has stayed with the team since then.

Greenard reportedly wants a new contract if he is traded, an upgrade from the four-year, $76 million deal he signed in Minnesota three years ago. Under those terms, he’d likely want to improve his contract into the range of Jaelan Phillips and Hendrickson, who each got close to $30 million per season in free agency.
How available Greenard might be to the rest of the league remains to be seen.
“In regards to the circumstances around those things right now, I’m excited about Jonathan Greenard in Year 3 with us, and excited about where our team’s going to go with him as a big part of our defense,” O’Connell said.
Greenard, who will turn 29 at the end of May, is coming off a three-sack season marred by a shoulder injury, but he posted back-to-back 12-sack seasons in 2023 and 2024, and the Vikings defensive end is faster off the ball than any defensive lineman currently on the Colts’ roster, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats.

He’s also a veteran leader.
“We love Jonathan Greenard,” O’Connell said. “He clearly has meant so much to our team from a standpoint of what he’s done on the field, but becoming a captain last year and really being one of those driving factors behind a team that could find themselves at 4-8 and finish at 9-8.”
Indianapolis could use a defensive end like that.
But the options might be getting thin as the offseason turns out of free agency and starts heading toward the draft.
“The path that we need is, obviously, d-line,” Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said at the NFL’s annual meeting on Sunday. “I think it’s a clear path as far as, what are the pieces that we need, and I feel like there’s a lot of great opportunities in the draft.”
