PHOENIX — The only boots Josh Allen has to worry about are the ones for his baby on the way.
The Buffalo Bills quarterback is out of his walking boot and trending toward a complete recovery in time for offseason workouts, general manager Brandon Beane said Monday at the NFL’s annual league meeting.
“His foot, I don’t want to say it’s 100 percent, but he’s good,” Beane said. “When he gets back in April, we expect him to be full-go.”
Allen broke a bone in his right foot during the Week 16 victory over the Cleveland Browns but didn’t miss any games. He had surgery shortly after the Bills’ playoff-elimination loss to the Denver Broncos, a disastrous performance in which Allen committed four turnovers and overthrew wide-open tight end Dawson Knox at the end of regulation on a play that likely would have won the game.
Allen has spent the offseason in California with his pregnant wife, Hailee Steinfeld. The actress, who starred in “Sinners,” a film that earned a record 16 Academy Award nominations, did not attend the Oscars ceremony two weeks ago because she was close to her delivery date.
“Our medical team has checked up on him,” Beane said, “and he’s talked to the surgeon that’s done it. I don’t know every single conversation they’ve had, but (Bills head athletic trainer) Nate Breske and (Bills lead physician) Les Bisson have let us know he’s on track and should be ready to roll once we’re actually doing football stuff in April.”
Allen, who will turn 30 in May, limped into new head coach Joe Brady’s introductory news conference in the walking boot in January but told reporters he would have played if the Bills were alive in the postseason.
