The San Francisco 49ers have their general manager, John Lynch, and head coach, Kyle Shanahan, tied together for at least the next two seasons. However, the question is whether this duo will stick together for the foreseeable future.

San Francisco has been to two Super Bowls in the Lynch and Shanahan era in 2020 and 2024. However, the team fell short of winning it all, losing both times to the Kansas City Chiefs.

As a result, being so close to winning a Super Bowl might be the motivating factor to see it through with the Niners until they can lift up the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

On March 30, Jed York, the principal owner and chief executive officer of the 49ers, spoke with the media on the futures of Lynch and Shanahan.

“I think Kyle’s got three years left,” York said (h/t Vic Tafur of The Athletic). “I want Kyle to be here for a long time. He’s been here for a long time. I want him to be here even longer. J.L., I think it’s this year and next, but I don’t know off the top of my head. I want J.L. to be here for a long time, but it’s really what do those guys want to do.”

Nonetheless, while York wants both these men at the forefront of the Niners, he also wants to ensure that their hearts and minds are in it for the long haul, helping the team win a championship.

“When you sit down and have conversations after 10 years, like where do you want to be?” York added. “What is your life like and how do you see it? Do you want to re‑up to be a part of the San Francisco 49ers?

“Do you want to do something else in our organization or a different place? I don’t know the answer, but I have a great relationship with both those guys, and I hope they’re here and they’re with me and the 49ers and our family for a very long time.”

49ers Issue Contract Update on Trent Williams

Speaking of contracts, the 49ers are in a situation with Trent Williams. The veteran offensive lineman is facing a cap hit of nearly $47 million after the team chose not to pick up his $10 million roster bonus.

Restructuring his contract could reduce that cap number and potentially add guaranteed money to a deal that currently has none, according to Pro Football Talk

Moreover, the Niners appear ready to ramp up talks to ensure this situation doesn’t linger any longer than necessary. On March 29, the SF Standard’s David Lombardi shared the latest on the 49ers’ plans to resolve the situation with their veteran offensive lineman.

“John Lynch says that 49ers’ talks with Trent Williams have ‘intensified’ over the past week,” Lombardi wrote on X. “He thinks ‘we’re on the precipice of something good.’”

In 2025, Williams played 996 snaps for the 49ers, allowing four sacks and eight hits while committing four penalties. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall grade of 91.5, ranking him third among all offensive tackles.

Furthermore, his run-blocking grade was 92.8, while his pass-blocking grade was 79.9. Williams gave up 32 total pressures in pass protection, including four sacks and eight hits.
