The 49ers have been one of the more active teams throughout the 2026 NFL free agency period so far.
Some of San Francisco’s most notable moves include the signings of wide receivers Mike Evans and Christian Kirk, the return of linebacker Dre Greenlaw and the trade for former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.
Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his thoughts on how this 49ers’ offseason has gone up to this point.
“I feel good about where the roster is,” Shanahan told reporters Monday at the NFL Annual League Meeting in Phoenix. “I mean, it was definitely a better offseason, I think, than the year prior.
“I mean, the year prior was tough, just losing all those guys. We still lost a number of guys this year, but we also added a number. We still have the draft ahead of us, but [I] love where we’re at now. I love all the moves that we’ve made and looking forward to making some more here in the draft.”
The 49ers significantly have made more roster improvements this offseason compared to their 2025 offseason, which saw more notable free-agent departures, including Deebo Samuel, Talanoa Hufanga and Charvarius Ward, than signings such as Mac Jones and Demarcus Robinson.
Especially with the additions of big-name NFL veterans such as Evans and Greenlaw, Shanahan and Co. are ecstatic about the revamped team ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft and training camp.
“I can’t say I would have expected that a week before free agency,” Shanahan responded when asked if he foresaw the 49ers signing the number of veteran free agents they did this offseason.
“I mean, you sit, and you evaluate everybody. You always look at the options that are there. And then you go into free agency, trying to understand the market, which you can add to your team based on the salary cap.
“I mean, I know ideally you’d always want to sign some brand new, young, healthy guys. But that’s not what’s always available at the store. You know, you’ve got to go with your choices. And I love the ones that we got. I felt very fortunate to get the guys that we got and decided to go forward with them with the team this year.”
In addition to their several acquisitions so far this offseason, the 49ers have six total selections in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, all of which are within the first four rounds.
San Francisco also will welcome some of its star players back from injury, from defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams to linebacker Fred Warner, adding to an already impressive group ahead of the 2026 regular season.
