The 49ers were one of the biggest movers and shakers in the NFL’s free-agency period, but there still are a couple of needs to address in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
San Francisco holds the No. 27 pick in this year’s draft and has been frequently projected to find a replacement for All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, as the team remains engaged in a contract dispute with the 38-year-old.
In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Matt Miller also has the 49ers slated to take an offensive tackle in the first round.
27. Caleb Lomu, OT, Utah
“I feel like I predict that the 49ers will draft their offensive tackle of the future every year, yet they never do,” wrote Miller. “Considering that All-Pro Trent Williams will be 38 and is in the midst of a contract impasse, this would be a good time for San Francisco to finally make that pick. Lomu started at left tackle during the past two seasons, allowing only three sacks (all in 2024). He plays with the agility and balance needed for the 49ers’ offensive scheme.”
The 6-foot-6 Utah product was named First Team All-Big 12 this past season, and was also a Freshman All-American in 2024.
Lomu was one of the most effective pass blockers in college football this past season, registering an 82.1 grade on PFF, a mark that ranked No. 29 among 598 eligible tackles.
If the 49ers select a left tackle during next month’s draft, it feels safe to assume that the Williams era is coming to a close.
