PHOENIX — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy believes they have a nice veteran competition between Brock Hoffman and Spencer Anderson at the left guard position.

“I think we’ve got really good veteran competition. It’s a group that I’d obviously like to add some young guys to that role. And really, I feel like I can say that throughout our whole roster. I thought we did a good job getting players, so we can add through the draft,” McCarthy said at the NFL Owners Meetings on Monday.

Hoffman, 26, played both center and guard for the Dallas Cowboys, with whom he played under new Pittsburgh McCarthy for three seasons. He started one game each at center and right guard in 2023, five games at right guard and two games at center in 2024 and six games at center and one game at left guard in 2025.

The Steelers were left with a hole at guard after veteran Isaac Seumalo departed to join the Arizona Cardinals on a three-year deal worth more than $31 million in free agency. Pittsburgh has repeatedly been linked to Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane in 2026 NFL Draft mock-ups.

By adding Hoffman, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 302 pounds, the Steelers would give themselves even more flexibility with their No. 21 overall pick.

A seventh-round pick of the Steelers out of Maryland in the 2023 NFL Draft, Anderson is set to enter his fourth season with the club. He earned the most extensive playing time of his career in 2025, serving as the team’s top backup guard and jumbo tight end.

Anderson played 160 snaps as a extra offensive lineman and 193 snaps at left guard in 2025, filling in for Seumalo, who dealt with a number of injuries throughout the season.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Anderson is a native of Bowie, Maryland, in between Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, and attended Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland.

He has appeared in 42 games and made 11 starts in his three-year NFL career, and is currently scheduled to become a free agent for the first time at the end of the 2026 season.
