The New York Jets continue to do their homework at the wide receiver position.

Rumors Are Swirling About Wicks

ESPN’s Rich Cimini mentioned Wicks as a possible trade target for the Jets in his column on Sunday, March 29.

At the Annual League Meetings, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur revealed that a few players were unhappy with their roles last season: “I think that took a toll on our football team,” via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

“Asked if those players are still on the team, he said he wouldn’t get into individual guys,” Schneidman added.

Green Bay Insider Peter Bukowski responded to this post saying, “They’re trading a WR.”

Several fans and analysts responded to Bukowski’s post, guessing who he might be referring to. One of the more popular responses was Wicks.

“And I’m betting it’s wicks”, a fan reacted.

Another fan said, “Wicks is good as gone.”

Getting Into the Numbers

Wicks, 24, will turn 25 before the start of the 2026 season.

The former Virginia product entered the league as the No. 159 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Wicks has one year remaining on his $4.1 million rookie contract. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. He is due a base salary of $3.6 million for the 2026 season.

Wicks has appeared in 46 games and has made 18 starts. With those opportunities, he has been targeted 180 times for 1,328 receiving yards and has caught 108 receptions with 11 touchdowns.

This Has a Certain Smell to It

Jets analyst Dylan Tereman said, “I would love the Jets to be the ones to land Wicks in a trade. Likely won’t cost a ton, and the upside of his skillset as a WR4 is intriguing. Surround Geno [Smith] with plenty of talent at the skill positions, and you can still draft one at 16/33/44 if you wish.”

General manager Darren Mougey has a type, and there is nothing wrong with that. In his brief tenure as GM, Mougey has struck trades aplenty.

What is the commonality among the majority of them? Taking low risk versus potential high-reward swings.

If Wick’s trade value is low, which would make sense, given that he is in the last year of his deal and his production has been relatively inconsequential, then this is a worthwhile risk.

The one thing Mougey would have to clear up before pulling the trigger is figuring out what went wrong in Green Bay. If Wicks had a problem with his role on offense, then it’s important to set clear expectations at the beginning of the relationship so nothing can get confused later in a potential deal with the Jets.
