Ahead of the April 15 reveal, Josh Harris and team sources share exclusive details on how social media designs helped shape Washington’s new look.

PHOENIX — From the day Washington Commanders managing partner Josh Harris took control of the organization, he’s emphasized honoring the past while moving the franchise forward into a brighter future.

Meeting with media at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, he emphasized that effort is continuing as the Commanders stand just over two weeks from a big reveal I expect to be at least very close to the Super Bowl Era throwbacks we saw in 2025, if not a carbon copy of the white jersey version with a new burgundy version to complete the primary uniform set.

Key Takeaways

Managing partner Josh Harris confirmed the new uniforms will heavily honor the franchise’s heritage and the RFK Stadium era.Team sources indicate that sophisticated fan designs on social media actively functioned as a communal focus group for the NFL and Nike. The front office strategically chose the mid-April reveal window to capture massive fan momentum just before the NFL Draft.

Harris said the idea of the new Washington threads is, “Updating but not forgetting about our heritage, who we are, and honoring that.”

“And we have a bunch of things up our sleeves. …I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but we’re going to continue to embrace our past, but then update it. …So, stay tuned.”

While we don’t have full details on what to expect when the uniform reveal arrives on April 15th, we were able to meet with a source close to the process who shared some of the insight into the redesign effort, the impact fans have had on that process, and why mid-April was selected as the right time to unveil the new uniforms.

The source shared that there is “a fairly methodical process that we work on with both the NFL and Nike as well. …We have a vision, and we have a path.”

Fan uniform designs on social media acted as a communal focus group

But this path isn’t one the team has walked down without fans, not just in mind, but as an external partner of sorts, by way of public and cultivated feedback the team has leveraged to ensure as much as possible that the vision marches to the beat of the fan pulse.

“I’m blown away, actually, by how sophisticated fans are at creating uniform closets and almost dangerously (in a good way) social media posts.” In fact, the source shared, those posts—your posts—sometimes make their way into the meeting rooms, and while the team may not be taking them as blueprints, they are seen and considered as feedback and as a sort of communal focus group.

Josh Harris wants the updated look to capture the magic of the RFK era

Not lost in that fan feedback is Harris himself, even if his station has placed him in a position to directly impact the outcome. “I lived through our past,” Harris reminded us. “Hey, I mean, I’m only 61, so I didn’t go back before the seventies, but I was there for the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, right? …So, I lived through how amazing those teams were, and you know, what an impact it had on me.”

“I know that thousands of our fans, or millions maybe, feel the same way. I think it’s important to go back to that as much as you can. But at the same time, we have a bright future ahead. Even the shape of the stadium and the look of the stadium. When you look at it, it looks like RFK, but it’s been modernized.”

Call it modern history, call it a rebranding of sorts, though Harris reiterated yet again that the team is committed to the Commanders moniker. Just, whatever you do, don’t call it simple. Even if some ideas are simplified, the process has been anything but.

“We’re always looking at this stuff,” Harris continued. And “we have a lot of surprises up our sleeve this season,” he said again.

The mid-April timeline was strategically chosen to build NFL Draft momentum

One thing we don’t know yet is whether the full uniform set, including alternate versions, will be unveiled on April 15 or if we’ll have to wait a little longer.

And not for lack of trying, though our source did say, “I want to keep you guessing a little bit. There’ll be plenty to look at, but you’ll have to wait and see exactly what comes from that.”

So, how much will be revealed is to be determined. When it will be is not. “April ended up being this really great moment right before the draft,” our source said about the timing.

“I’m excited to see the reaction,” Harris concluded. “I think we’ve got it right and I’m going to leave it to, you know, the surprise situation to allow everyone to enjoy it.”
