The Green Bay Packers are still searching for a new backup quarterback to replace Malik Willis.

Over the last two years, Willis has offered elite backup quarterback play behind Jordan Love. After being acquired from the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick, Willis played quite a bit of meaningful football for the Packers.

Love missed some time with injury in each of the last two years. Willis stepped in and performed admirably.

Due to his impressive play, Willis ended up becoming a top-tier free agency target this offseason. He signed with the Miami Dolphins on a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract.

With that being said, quite a few names have been brought up as possible targets for Green Bay. One of those names is Indianapolis Colts‘ former No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson.

Packers Land New Update on Potential Anthony Richardson Trade

Chris Ballard, the Colts’ general manager, recently spoke out about Richardson’s future. It was an update that suggests the Packers could have a chance to acquire him.

“We’ll see how it works out here over time. We’ve had some discussions with teams. Nothing’s come to fruition at this point,” Ballard said.

“I’m proud of his development, his growth. He’s had some bad freaking luck. We’ve seen it in this league, sometimes thing don’t work out one place and they become good at the next. We’ll see here over the next month how that ends up working out with Anthony.”

Richardson has requested a trade away from Indianapolis. No one can blame him for that request after the Colts invested into Daniel Jones this offseason. There is almost no path to playing time for Richardson moving forward.

Anthony Richardson Could Be Another Malik Willis

In order for Green Bay to trade for Richardson, a late-round pick would have to be the return. The Packers likely aren’t going to trade anything more than a sixth-round pick for him.

He could offer Green Bay another Willis situation. A young quarterback who hasn’t panned out with his first NFL team that simply needs a fresh start with a franchise that develops quarterbacks at a high level.

Matt LaFleur would be an ideal head coach for Richardson. Just like he did with Willis, he could help Richardson revitalize his career. That has to be an interesting potential landing spot for the young signal caller.

Expect to see the Packers make a move for a new quarterback at some point in the near future. When it comes to Richardson, it sounds like the window is definitely open for a trade to take place if the asking price is right.
