The Minnesota Vikings surprised many when they decided to fire former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah this offseason. Rather than look for a replacement, Rob Brzezinski, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, took over the role through the 2026 NFL Draft, and after that, the Vikings will begin their search.
On March 31, Vikings owner and president Mark Wilf shared an update on the team’s search for a new general manager, noting that the groundwork is already in place to begin once the draft is over.
“We’re already laying the groundwork,” Wilf said. “Again, this is an ownership decision, very important for the club. But right, you know, we’re really focused on the NFL draft. We’ve got nine picks. We’re really excited about it. I think our fans should be as well.
“So we’re excited about that and focused on that. And then right after the draft, we’ll get going in terms of interviews, getting the best candidates, talking through it and making sure we have the right leader for our organization.”
Despite receiving an extension the year prior, seeing Sam Darnold win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks last season after being with the Vikings in 2024 and letting him walk might have been one reason Minnesota decided to go in a different direction.
Nonetheless, whoever they hire will inherit head coach Kevin O’Connell, and it will be interesting to see how that dynamic works, since most times new general managers tend to hire their own head coach.
Vikings Give J.J. McCarthy Update Ahead of QB Battle
Moreover, whoever gets the Vikings’ general manager job walks into a QB battle featuring Carson Wentz, J.J. McCarthy, and Kyler Murray. When it comes to McCarthy, Minnesota is forcing McCarthy to earn the job, and Kevin Seifert of ESPN shared what head coach Kevin O’Connell said regarding the latest on the young QB’s efforts to do just that.
“Kevin O’Connell said that J.J. McCarthy is back in Minnesota after spending the early part of the offseason training in California, and has been in the building most days working out in the weight room,” Seifert wrote on March 30 on X.
Cardinals HC Talks Kyler Murray Exit
McCarthy knows he’s in for a fight to be the Vikings’ starter, as Murray is the favorite to win the job. After a foot injury ended his 2025 season, the Arizona Cardinals decided it was time for both parties to part ways.
On March 30, Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur spoke about Murray’s exit from Arizona.
“It’s one of those things that sometimes it’s just good for both parties to part ways, if you will,” LaFleur told reporters (h/t Bo Brack of PHNX Cardinals). “So again, we wish him the best. He had a lot of success here.
“I know when I was on the other sideline, [Murray] was a problem. And again, wish him all the success, but we felt like this was the best thing moving forward.”
It will be interesting to see who the Vikings hire and what their thoughts are on the QB battle, as Minnesota doesn’t want to miss the playoffs for a second straight season.
