Which player will wear the green dot for the Washington Commanders in 2026?

That is, which defensive player will be designated to wear the green dot on his helmet this upcoming season? What does the green dot indicate? For those unaware, the NFL permits one player on defense (and one on offense) to have a device inside his helmet that can hear defensive signals from a coach. One-way communication is enabled when the previous play ends and remains on until 15 seconds remain on the play clock for the next snap of the ball.

Middle linebacker Bobby Wagner wore the green dot and called the plays for the Commanders‘ defense during the previous two seasons (2024-2025). However, Wagner’s NFL future is currently unknown. The Commanders’ defensive leader still played the run quite well, but was a liability in pass coverage in 2025.

Last season, head coach Dan Quinn more than once talked of how reserve LB Jordan Magee was really growing, learning, and had a bright future ahead of him in the NFL. The Commanders also have the experienced veteran Frankie Luvu, and this offseason, they signed free-agent linebacker Leo Chenal. It has yet to be made public whether the Commanders will play three or four linebackers, or whether the scheme will be a 34 or 43 defense.

Also, might the Commanders select one of their safeties to wear the green dot and relay defensive calls during games? Washington did sign free agent safety Nick Cross this offseason. Cross played nearly 100 percent of the Colts’ defensive snaps last season. Cross, therefore, might be a reliable candidate for the job as well.

Ben Standig, one of the Commanders’ top beat reporters who covers the team for his substack, Last Man Standig, was at this week’s league meetings. Standig said he asked Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid about Chenal. Reid expressed regarding Chenal, “Not only is he a man in terms of strength, he’s also very intelligent and could handle those duties”, even though he did not for the Chiefs.

We remember that the 2026 NFL Draft will take place in 23 days, when the Commanders are scheduled to select seventh in the first round. Whomever the Commanders select will not be wearing the green dot for the Commanders in 2026 — unless it’s Sonny Styles?
