The NFL draft is in 22 days. The annual event gives NFL teams a chance to improve their rosters and plan for the future. The Washington Commanders have just six picks in this year’s draft due to GM Adam Peters’ big trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil last year. Because of that, Peters has had to get creative this offseason with who he signed and who he retained, but now he must turn his focus to the picks he has to work with.
Draft analysts and experts can’t seem to agree on who the Commanders will select. Their No. 7 overall pick has to be the right pick because they won’t have another selection until the third round. We’ve seen names like David Bailey, Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, Carnell Tate, and even Jeremiyah Love as potential draft targets with this pick. That means the consensus is no one really knows what the Commanders are going to do.

And what about the value of the picks they do have? How do the Commanders rank in draft value compared to the rest of the league? A recent CBS Sports article ranked every team’s draft picks value using a draft pick value chart created by R.J. White. The chart assigns a point value to each selection, so after totaling the points, the Commanders rank 12th in overall draft pick value with 527.98 points.
Each team’s draft pick value should be near where they draft in the first round, but the Commanders fall a little short of that because they don’t have a pick in every round. Washington is without picks in the second and fourth rounds.
This is just another indicator of how accurate Peters has to be with his draft picks this year. He has to be smart, make the right choices for the team, and not pick up a player simply because he’s talented. The Commanders have kept their draft intentions largely internal, which suggests that Peters understands the tall task ahead of him. It will be interesting to see where the organization lands at No. 7 in a few weeks.
