Coming out of the NFL Owners Meetings in Arizona, ESPN’s Nick Wagoner painted a picture of a San Francisco 49ers organization that feels both energized and realistic about where it stands heading into a pivotal offseason.

Speaking with Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show, Wagoner said the biggest takeaway wasn’t one single headline, but a broader sense of tone shift inside the building.

“I did think it was interesting. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch were a lot more relaxed this year as opposed to last year,” Wagoner said.

“I think a lot of that stems from last year, which was such a massive roster reset. They’re kind of energized by that.”

More on the 49ers offseason

That “reset year,” which still produced a 12-win season and a playoff victory, has seemingly given the 49ers confidence in their direction again.

Wagoner noted that despite all the offseason noise surrounding players like Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, and injuries across the roster, the organization feels more settled than it did a year ago.

One of the most notable developments coming out of Arizona centered on Trent Williams. Wagoner described the language from general manager John Lynch as unusually optimistic.

“We’re on the precipice of something good happening,” Lynch said, a phrase Wagoner interpreted as a strong signal that a resolution is close. “My understanding is the goal is to have it done by the draft,” Wagoner added.

The health of key players also loomed large. There’s growing optimism around the returns of stars like Nick Bosa and George Kittle, though Wagoner cautioned against assuming full-speed availability immediately.

“It should be no surprise that he should be ready to go,” he said of Bosa, while noting Kittle’s recovery timeline remains more fluid, especially with travel complications early in the season.

Perhaps the most complicated storyline remains Aiyuk’s future. Wagoner was blunt about the lack of traction on a potential trade market.

“I just don’t think it’s realistic,” he said, citing contract structure, limited draft capital, and Aiyuk’s preferences as major obstacles. “I never say never… I just don’t know why a team would be willing to give up something for him.”

Still, despite uncertainty, Wagoner emphasized that the 49ers’ approach remains methodical rather than reactive. From injury management investments to roster-building philosophy, the organization appears focused on long-term stability while still trying to maximize the window to win a Super Bowl.

As Wagoner summed up, the 49ers “feel like they’ve got a good shot as anybody,” but only if health, execution, and timing finally align.
