WESTERLY — Westerly record-setting quarterback Landon Husereau made the announcement Tuesday on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Bulldog football fans knew was a possibility all off-season since winning the RIIL Division II state championship in November.

He announced he would leave Westerly, re-classify as a junior at Philips Academy (Andover, Mass.) and go to prep school and play football next fall.

“Excited to announce I’ll be transferring to (Phillips Academy), and reclassing to the Class of 2028. (Westerly) will always be home. Nothing but love for my coaches, teammates, and this community. Can’t wait to get to work with the legendary Ernie Adams and the rest of the staff and teammates,” Husereau said in the post on X.

Adams was a New England Patriots researcher and administrative assistant from 2000 to 2021. He was considered a key contributor and guru for head coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots’ six Super Bowl dynasty. Adams, 73, has since come out of retirement to coach at Phillips Academy.

Last fall, Husereau passed for 2,829 yards and a state-record 40 touchdowns iin one season to lead the Bulldogs to the RIIL Division II Super Bowl title in a 44-21 win over South Kingstown. The 6-3, 200-pounder also owns the state’s all-time touchdowns record with 90 touchdown passes. He broke the record, firing six TDs in the title win over SK.

Westerly coach Ron Sposato Jr. gave his best wishes.

“II knew there was probably a 50/50 chance he would go to a prep school,” Sposato said. “Phillips Academy is one of the best academic prep schools in the country with a long list of famous alumni. This is a great opportunity for Landon and his future. I wish him the best of luck.”

Westerly was 9-2 last season, winning its first RIIL title in over 20 years. After an outstanding youth football career for Westerly’s peewee program, Husereau started immediately as a freshman and made All-State Second team. He Passed for 1,840 yards, 23 TDs and 10 interceptions.

Husereau missed three games during his sophomore season with an injured shoulder but he still threw for 2,015 yards, 27 TDs and just two interceptions. He benefitted greatly from the addition of then freshman wideout Danny Cummings and made All-State First team despite his injury time.

Last year as junior, Husereau’s statline read repeated First team honors as a junior last fall after his stat-line of 2,800-plus yards, 40 TDs and seven interceptions. His career totals of 6,684 yards and 90 TD passes, in three seasons, are unrivaled.

“Landon has been a huge part of our success the last three seasons,” Sposato said. “He’s broken numerous school and state records. He helped bring a state championship back to Westerly for the first time since 2001. He we be missed.”
